Presenter: Elaine Park

The Acts of the Apostles is a New Testament book that tells of the development of the early Church through the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. As we delve into this book, we will see how the Church of the first century presents insights into how we continue to live faithfully in the Church today. As the first Christians faced challenges both from outside the believing community and from within, so too has the Church throughout its history. And in both the past and the present, Spirit-filled people have been courageous witnesses to their faith in a great variety of circumstances.  You are welcome to come for any or all of the classes.

ADULT VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

 July 28th - August 1
at 7:00 in the Parish Center

Monday 28: Faith and Science Fr. John Boyle
"Though faith is above reason, there can never be any real discrepancy between faith and reason.  God cannot deny Himself, nor can truth ever contradict truth" CCC 159

Tuesday 29:  ICONS  Iconographer Monica McBride
There is a specific order to writing the icon: from the most general space (background) to the most specific (the face). Why is it called writing an icon instead of painting an icon?  Theologically icons are writing the gospels.  Like the scribes of old they transcribe the message using a different language.

Wednesday 30: Purgatory Fr. Michael Pope
For those who find themselves in a condition of being open to God, but still imperfectly, the journey towards full beatitude requires a purification, which the faith of the Church illustrates in the doctrine of "Purgatory" (CCC 1030-1032).

Thursday 31:  Great Expectations: How the Jewish Hope was fulfilled in Christ Ryan Mainard                                                                                                 What were the Old Testament expectations for the Messiah? How is Jesus a new and better Moses? Learn how the 10 Commandments are expanded in the Beatitudes

Friday Aug.1: Movie Restless Heart Confessions of St. Augustine In this stirring and epic new film on the life of St. Augustine of Hippo,  follow the great saint as he rises from his reckless days as a youth to his accomplishments as a renowned but dissolute orator.  2 hours 10 min.
