As requested of us by the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Portland, Christ the King Catholic Church offers Baptism Preparation Classes for parents and Godparents seeking this Sacrament for their children.
GENERAL GUIDELINES:
The family requesting Baptism must be a registered member of Christ the King Parish prior to registering for the Baptism class.
Our Baptism classes are offered 6 times a year and consist of one (1 ½ hour session). The scheduled dates are updated on the baptism page. They are held on a Sunday at noon. Come 15 minutes early to sign in and get settled. We start promptly at noon. Parents and godparents must attend a baptismal preparation class, here or at another Catholic parish. The class takes place in the Parish Office, which is the one story building at the end of the parking lot beyond the school gym.
Prior to the baptism, the parents will need to schedule an informal visit (not more than 15 minutes) with the baptismal coordinator. This can be an in-person visit or a phone conversation.
WHO IS REQUIRED TO ATTEND THE BAPTISM CLASS
Both parents if one parent is not Catholic, he or she is highly encouraged to attend the class.
Single parentif unmarried or divorced. Another family member is welcome to attend the class.
Both God Parentsneed to attend a baptismal preparation class. If not attending here at Christ the King, they can attend at a different Catholic parish but need to provide documentation of attendance at least one week prior to the baptism. Let the office know if you have special circumstances.
Expecting Parentsare welcomed to take the class prior to the birth of their child and to follow up with the parish office after the child is born.
REQUIREMENTS OF GOD PARENTS
Preferably, both must be practicing Catholics who have been Confirmed and are in good standing orat least one of them. The second may be of another faith (he/she is then called a WITNESS). A letter from the godparents parish stating that they are practicing Catholics in good standing is needed. Email, send, or fax to the parish office.
FOLLOWING THE CLASS
The baptism is scheduled on a Sunday at noon (after the 10:30 Mass) depending on the availability of the pastor, deacon, and a member of the baptism team to set up, clean up, and lock up.
